We use different methods in training and sometimes it is not so easy to decide which method would you like to use. It can be helpful if you first decide on an overall methodology of the training – is the energy and setting of this event very serious or is it more spontaneous, relaxed and playful?

The learning pyramid – which method is the most memorable

The learning pyramid shows that lecturing is the least efficient method of learning. Improving retention, recall of information and enhancing your learning experience is best, when you teach others (90 %), while reading gives us only a 10 % retention rate. However – even with lectures being the least effective method that does not mean that you have to completely avoid it – just make sure that you insert other methods as well. That is why we use engaging methods at trainings that allow higher retention in learning.

Diversity in each training session

Think about the methods you use and mind the diversity in your training session:

  • VAK aspect (visual – are you using graphic materials? auditory – do you use videos?, kinesthetic – do people move around?)
  • Focus and direction (individual vs. group, is the topic more relevant on individual or group level?)
  • Configuration (body – physical exercises, mind – mental exercises, feelings – focus on emotions)
training methods

You can also structure methods in different categories based on an overall methodology of the training and here are a few examples:

Playful methodology

  • Outdoor exercises
  • Challenges
  • Roleplays
  • Quiz
  • Improvisational theatre exercises
  • Using different materials (clay / foam / huge boxes / …)
  • Space positioning

Serious methodology

  • Discussions
  • Simulations
  • Case studies
  • Presentations
  • questionnaires

Structured methodology

  • Puzzle games
  • Brainstormings
  • Reflection groups
  • Problem-solving processes
  • Visualization

Choosing the best method in practice

Practice makes it perfect, they say. At CorpoHub’s Trainers Master Class, we dig deep into training design and talk about the methods and methodology we use in training. Our certification starts in February 2022, check out the program and boost your training confidence and creativity.
